Villa Cal Xino - Sleeps 8 - Pollensa, Mallorca
Summer is over and the kids have gone back to school. But wait... The half term holidays in October are just round the corner and your chance to get a little late sunshine before winter, Christmas and the New Year.
And before you start asking yourself if you really deserve another holiday so soon after summer, remember that your body needs a break regularly, your skin needs Vitamin D: "Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight." (Vitamin D Council) and life can be stressful and stress, as we all know, is not very good for you.
Besides, it's almost November, the summer ended months ago!
October lets in Mallorca are so affordable that it's really a no-brainer when it comes to costs. Not only is it cheaper to rent a holiday villa in autumn, but it's less expensive to fly there too, rent a car or bike, eat out, and any activity, service or attraction you may like to do.
If you can get away later in the season, in October or November, you may find that the climate and prices suit you more.
There is a general view that Mallorca is best visited during the peak season, and though most of us and confined to school holidays, not everyone need be. The summer season in Mallorca is great, but temperatures in the 40s are not always the best option for families with children, especially very young children. The heat is intense and the island is crowded at this time of year.
Global warming and climate change could well be responsible for the havoc caused by wildfires and the extreme heat waves experienced as far north as the Polar Circle this last summer.
We were not prepared for the high temperatures in Mallorca either. Autumn here is more often than not a welcome break. It is when the island cools and calms down, after the mad and messy rush of summertime. Average temperatures for October begin at around 20°C and slowly drop down to 16°C towards the end of the month.

While some of the smaller regional airports in Europe do see a reduction in flights to Mallorca after the summer rush, airlines continue to fly from capitals and major cities throughout the year, and while prices vary, on the whole it becomes significantly cheaper to get to Mallorca out of season.
I might add here that a much emptier airport is always a plus. Whatever your chosen mode of transport, it helps when you don't have millions of fellow tourists clamouring for the same rent-a-car or taxi!

The Balearic Islands lie on the migratory path for hundreds of bird species who fly south in the winter and north in the summer, much like we do really, to avoid the worst weather and take advantage of sunny climes. On route these birds often take a few days rest in Mallorca, and some of the favoured top off points are to be found in the Nature Reserves and Bird Sanctuaries in the north of the island, in and around Puerto Pollensa.
Places to look out for birds : Formentor Peninsula, the Boquer Valley, La Gola, S'Albufereta, S'Albufarea and the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains.
There are 23 golf courses on the island, 19 associated and 2 in the north of Mallorca; Pollensa Golf (9 holes) on the outskirts of Pollensa Old Town and Golf Club Alcanada (18 holes) on the northern side of the Bay of Alcudia and overlooking the small island and lighthouse by the same name. These two are regularly voted amongst the top golf clubs on the island and offer a challenging range of holes for all levels, as well as tremendous views from the clubhouse and bar, always a winner. It is a vast and varied choice for a small Mediterranean island, and consequently, golf holidays are quickly becoming one of the more popular reasons to visit Mallorca out of season.

Autumn, along with spring, is one of the best times of year to cycle in Mallorca. Temperatures drop, the roads clear, accommodation becomes available at much lower prices, as does bike rental, cars, transfers, flights and services. Cycling villas are a phenomenal option when travelling with a small group. Larger groups can sometimes let adjoining properties, and family cycling trips, or combinations of, suit the villa letting idea well, allowing all members to enjoy their stay.
