Festivities in Pollensa

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the village was founded during the Catalan-Christian conquest in the 13th century. La Patrona
Mark in your calendar the second day of August! One of the most special dates for the residents of Pollensa. The town dresses in white and colours to honour its Patron Saint, Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, and celebrates history and traditions with great enthusiasm.
Many events take place during this celebration, as it is a week full of festivities. But without a doubt, the most relevant and exciting event of La Patrona festivities is the re-enactment of the battle of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians).
In order to contextualise this celebration, it is worth going back many centuries. Specifically, to the 16th century, when the Pollencins (Christians) defended their town against the Saracen corsairs (Moors) on the night of the 30th to 31st May 1550. One of the most important elements of the celebrations is the dance of the “cossiers”. Did you know that it was reinstated in 1981 after 71 years of absence?
Celebration of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians)
Every August 2nd, during the festivity of the Mare de Déu dels Àngels, the Patron Saint, several celebrations take place, among the most outstanding is the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) in Pollensa. It recreates an exciting battle won against the pirates that took place in 1550. The re-enactment is detailed and realistic, the actors dress in white nightclothes, as if they were caught at midnight, just as they were in the original battle.
The performance begins in the calle mayor of Pollensa, where the first confrontation between the Christians and the pirates is staged. The fight is interpreted with passion, choreography and special effects, which invites the spectators to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the time.
The next battle takes place in the Plaza de Sant Jordi, where the tension is heightened as the actors skillfully portray the fight, even recreating the sounds of the clashing swords and the cries of the combatants.
The final battle takes place on the football pitch, where the climax of the Christians’ victory over the pirates is depicted. Once the victory is achieved, an impressive fireworks display from the castle begins to explode. The colours and lights illuminate the night, creating a truly magical moment.
The re-enactment of this battle during the Patron Saint’s festivities is a very exciting and spectacular event for its residents, as it pays great homage to the history and bravery of their ancestors in the 16th century.
